John Owen: Learned Puritan
BY MARK BURDEN
The following bibliography of John Owen is the first to list his manuscript writings as well as his printed works. The first section, on Owen’s printed texts, fills a gap in Owen scholarship by keying the seventeenth-century spellings of his works to William Goold’s more readily-available nineteenth-century edition; it also indicates alternative catalogues and bibliographies where further descriptions of each text may be found. The bibliography pays greater attention than previous handlists to early collections of Owen’s writings, and a fuller list of works either responding directly to Owen’s writings, or mentioning them. I have provided tables showing the key sources for Owen’s letters, thereby rectifying an inadequacy in Peter Toon’s 1970 edition of his correspondence. I have also indicated some important printed editions of primary sources for the study of Owen and his times. The lists of secondary sources place Owen firmly within historical and literary as well as theological scholarship, and suggest avenues for future research into Owen’s career as a learned puritan.
Part 1: Primary Sources

(7) The Correspondence of John Owen
The following notes are drawn primarily from Peter Toon, The Correspondence of John Owen (Cambridge and London, 1970). However, Toon’s edition does not list primary sources clearly and does not provide any account of his editorial policy. For these reasons, it is to be hoped that greater attention will be paid to the manuscripts of Owen’s letters in the near future.

Part 2: Secondary Sources
The following bibliography of secondary sources is divided into these catagories:
(1) Books on John Owen
(2) Articles and Chapters on John Owen
(3) PhD Dissertations on John Owen
(4) Books on Puritanism, Nonconformity and Dissent
(5) Books on Seventeenth-Century Education
Whereas previous lists of secondary sources on Owen (at johnowen.org and in The Ashgate Research Companion) have been predominantly theological, the ensuing bibliography allows greater space for work which has been undertaken on Owen by literary, political and intellectual historians. It excludes web-based essays, many of which have only temporary urls; it also excludes theological pamphlets. Nevertheless, I have included a sample of polemical theological articles on Owen, where I have found them to be of notable interest beyond their immediate purpose. Similarly, I have listed a selection of the most influential doctoral dissertations on Owen, but I have excluded MA and ThM theses. This bibliography is unusual in placing Owen scholarship firmly within other historical writing about puritanism, including other major literary writers, such as John Milton, Richard Baxter, John Bunyan and George Fox. It is unique in locating Owen at the centre of scholarship concerning the nature of Early Modern education.
